The first ever KOMIKON AWARDS was held back in 2006 on the 2nd year of the Philippine Annual Komiks Convention. It is with great delight that we bring it back in a bigger and better venue and in celebrating the event’s 5th year. Once again, let us give recognition to those who continue to pour their heart, soul and income to a said “ailing industry” that still thrives to bring entertainment to future generations.

The categories are as follows:

Best Comic

This is for the ultimate… the chosen one. This is for the best among the rest. This means that the comic has achieved its ultimate potential; it’s all that and then some. This covers the mainstream comics, published and sold in the major local bookstores. This is for those that have reached the pinnacle of comic making; it’s up there, head and shoulders above the rest, looking down on us through a magnifying glass. This is for the comic that embodies all the things that made us love comics in the first place. The Best Comic award is divided in four categories:

Best Graphic Novel / Anthology*
Graphic Novels are defined as novels whose narrative is related through a combination of text and art, often in comic-strip form. On the other hand, an anthology is a collection of stand alone comic book stories collected in one publication by a group or one author. This award aims to honor the best comic book creator or group of creators for their exemplary work.

Best Serialized Comic*
A comic series published regularly in a magazine, newspaper or comic book publication.

Best Comic Magazine
This award is given to the best comic book magazine still seeing print be it a single story or made up of several.

Best Comic Strip Compilation
Here’s a step from the day-to-day print to more lasting impressions. One strip is never enough.

Best Comic Creator/s*

This award recognizes the talents of a solo artist or team of artists in making the best comic there is.

Best Cover*

A cover dictates how people see your comic. Sales also depend on the cover. And here we salute those covers that made us look and look hard. And the effort to it took to conceptualize, pencil, ink, and in some cases, to color the cover. The award shall go to the artist or group of artists that created such masterpiece.

Best Cartoonist*

The award acknowledges the countless comic strip artists whose works are published in newspapers, tabloids and magazines. Some might say that comic strip artists don’t get the props that they deserve. They give us the simple delight of a smile, a chuckle or an all-out laugh. They’re one of those everyday things we tend to pass by, yet they’re sometimes important as their humor is sometimes the only solace in those dreary days.

Grassroot Award*

This award is for those countless photocopied mini-comics that we now fondly call “indies”. That among those countless black and white comics stood out and proved to be the one with the most Oomph! of them all. This is for the indie that made the biggest dent among the populace be it good or bad, it made enough noise for people to look and take notice. It made enough of a statement that people actually stopped and listened. It brought something new and fresh that has never been done or seen before. Be it the concept, the art, or the story, it was a breath of fresh air among the masses of photocopied, folded in half and stapled twice in the spine comics. This is meant for those who dreamt of making a mark on the comic industry, and have succeeded, quite magnificently at that.

Best Webcomic*

A lot of effort goes into the webcomics we see and enjoy on the net. And they do not get the credit they deserve. But that’s why we are here, to give props to those under-appreciated webcomics, to give to where it is due.

Komiks Character of the Year

This award is for the most memorable, the funniest and most unforgettable komiks character. It could be male, female, a robot, an animal…anything. This is for our respective favorites, villain or hero.

Best Comic Scene

Who would forget that first kiss, that most tragic death, that most exhilarating fight, or even that scene that brought you to tears or made you curl up in laughter?

Comics Aid Award

Komiks would have not been possible if creators did not have any help. This is for those who have helped take comics from concept to fruition, from the little things to the humongous tasks. For all those who helped from photocopiers to publishers, family and friends, for artists, fans and fellow believers who continue to spread awareness about the industry, this is for those who have helped make what we see before our eyes.

NOMINATIONS

* Different titles created by a single artist/group can be nominated in one category.

• Nominated works, whether published, independent, or web comic, should have been released from 2006 until May 2009.

• Artists and works that have been nominated during the first KOMIKON Awards can still be nominated considering that their work/s is/are still being published during the nomination period.

• Nomination period will begin on July 1, 2009 and end on July 15, 2009.

• E-mail your nominations to komikon.awards[@]gmail.com with the subject: KOMIKON AWARDS NOMINATION. Only e-mail nominations will be accepted.

VOTING

• Voting period will be from August 10 – September 20, 2009. The voting procedures will be announced.

We are trying to look all over the internet for what people thought of Komikon and here are snippets of the reviews that we saw. Some have also uploaded pictures and videos. To read the full review, just follow the link.

1. Usually I attend conventions for the purpose of anime/cosplay related stuff; however, for this time around, I attended a convention not for this reason and even excluded the idea of it. My purpose of going to Komikon 2009 was really for comics ... Attending an anime convention usually only robs my wallet of its money because of the entrance fee; however, attending a convention on comics robs my wallet of almost all of its money. by nopickup

2. Managed to get a handful of local titles: Cadre: Amerikanong Hilaw, Baboy, The Girl Who Turned Into a Fish, and Ang Maskot. I'm liking the latter very very much. ... It was also announced that there will be another Komikon around October, and this time in a bigger venue. That means will just have enough time to read and recover from this event. Here's hoping that will have more finds (and funds to buy the finds) later this year. by kantogirl

3. Just got back. Seems 4 hours is about all I can take before shoulders collapse from carrying loot! But can't wait for next one. Might be fun to get a table next time but I don't know anyone who could share it with me. :/ by andrael

4. I was waiting for the organizers to announce the Komikon plans for that huge PICCA event in October. PICCA is the Philippine International Cartoons, Comics and Animation Festival that’s going to be held at the SM Megamall from October 15-18. I was aware of this because I’m one of those helping organize the event.

It’s a huge thing, and a big deal, so my ears were peeled towards the stage for any announcements. The only announcement I heard was my name being called to the stage, along with Sir Orvy Jundis. And as we sat there on the stage, in front of everyone in the Komikon, we were asked to announce the PICCA. Oh, I’M going to make the announcement. ha! ha!

It was also announced that another Komikon will be held on October 18 at the SM Megatrade Hall, which would be, in effect, the 4th day of the PICCA. There’s lots more to be said about this huge event, but I will make a separate post about it soon.

At 7:00pm we packed up, and as it has become our tradition after selling ELMER at the Komikon, we passed by KFC and had a bucket of chicken before we went back home.

5. this is the first time i have attended a KomiKon chevers.. there were people in anime costumes and there were other people in Komix costumes.. hahaha.. there were people on the stage and there were people on their duties selling goodies and stuffs.. hahaha.. tpos there are some artists displaying their collection of works..me ibang authors ng komix na nandito, ngautograph signing (with some photos) by Nikka Mae

6. Going to these great conventions require a lot of self-control even if you are not a hardcore comic collector or fan. Why? Because everyone can relate to any comic/cartoon character by Sire

7. Went to Summer Komikon yesterday. "Summer" because they followed komiket's bi-annual frequency in holding events.

Stayed for around 4 hours in the event. None of the comics sold by established and indie artists caught my eye but the place wasn't boring. Dunno why, maybe it's just because I haven't been to UP since my departure from the former company. by bryan_datenshi

8. I didn't expect the Summer Komikon to be crowded. It may not be as crowded as the November Komikon but I was surprised there are a lot of people including students having money to spend during the summer vacation. by Hazel Manzano

9. All in all the KOMIKON 2009 Summer Fiesta was a smashing success. A lot of comic enthusiasts get to have good quality works of art that they all love to read, collect, and be inspired with. 10. it was my first time on the other side of the exhibition table, and i'm still a little high from the experience. whew!

thanks to all the people who bought ang maskot, especially the folks who told their friends about it, or even better, came back later with a friend in tow, going, "that's the one i was telling you about," right in front of me, thus shaming the friend into buying a copy. you guys have a special place in my heart. 11. It was…noisy, crowded, fun, and hot in the Bahay ng Alumni at U.P. Diliman. Hopefully I have something to sell on the next Komikon. (with photos) by Edgar Tadeo

12. As usual, I forgot to bring an electric fan for the booth, and thanks to my polar bear body, I was sweating buckets the minute I sat down. So, I must apologize to all the people who asked me to sign their books and I just ended up sweating on the pages.

13. I went to the Summer Komikon 2009 with 3 goals: 1) to buy a box for my comic books; 2) to look for issues 2-4 of Cursed; and 3) to enjoy the experience. It was my first time, after all.

After a snack and one more round of going around the venue, I left the Summer Komikon. While I may not have fully accomplished goal number 1, I did accomplish goals 2 and 3, with a few more kicks thrown in. I went home tired, but truly satisfied with my first Komikon experience! I can’t wait for the next one! by Ryan

14. I’m glad they decided to hold an additional komikon in the summer–or, in the event that they’ve actually done so before, I’m glad I heard about it in time this year. I loved the way they identified the Marshalls this year–via speech baloons which said “Marshall Ako”

That being said, I’m very happy Komikon appears to be a resounding success this year as well. I saw the entries in the character creation contest and saw some well-executed works, and while I don’t know who won, I found myself partial to the dugong-turtle hybrid, if only due to sheer cute-ness of concept. by Bahay Talinhaga

15. Uhhh...I spent more than a meant to at Komikon today. I was planning to just look around and pick up three or four indie comics, because I'm saving up for a camera. But I'm such an easy sell that I ended up with a lot more. Seriously, as long as you look at me and tell me about your comic, I will buy it. Even if it sounds like something I wouldn't like. Even if the art is all squiggles. I'll give anything a chance. by eula_tequila

16. Philippine Daily Inquirer’s head cartoonist Jess Abrera was able to attend the closing activities of Komikon Summer Fiesta 2009, just in time to bask in the glow of his son Manix Abrera’s successful Alab ng Puso book tour.

Pol Medina, Jr. was also able to launch Book 21 of his Pugad Baboy series. The Komikon team was even able to get him to sign his last-minute endorsement of the event in last Friday’s Pugad Baboy strip in PDI. (with photos) by Lyndon Gregorio

17. The sun was shining and the wasn’t a single rain cloud in sight as we lined up to get ourselves the “Early-Bird Freebies” for the early attendees. The hot weather didn’t deter us from our mission as we got hold of the loot: the official KomiKon fan (it was orange this time), a couple of flyers, and a Justice League poster! the ticket price was very cheap for Php 50, since you will be granted access to all sorts of merchandise, comics related or not!

3. Contestants will create a 10x3 inch strip using any existing WWE wrestler/s based on the theme that will only be revealed when the contest starts.

Komikon Indie COMICS Tiangge Clarifications

There has been a lot of questions on the Terms of the Komikon Indie Tiangge. After deliberation by the committee, we would like to inform everyone of the following guidelines:

1) Komikon COMICS Indie Tiangge is for selling comics - original or fanfics are accepted.

2) Merchandise will be allowed, ONLY IF, it is based on your own original comics' creation/characters.

3) Any other merchandise will not be allowed. Unauthorized items will be confiscated by a Komikon representative.

4) Individuals/groups found to have violated the terms and conditions will be subject to disciplinary actions and consequent penalties.

Examples of items that will be allowed:

-Original comics that you (or your group) created using your own original characters;

-Doujin/fan-made comics that you (or your group) created based on other characters as drawn by you with your own interpretation;

-Non-comics merchandise (like pins, bookmarks, etc) made by you (or your group) based on your original characters from your original comics

Examples of items that WILL NOT be allowed:

-Pornographic comics and non-comics merchandise depicting child/children

-Non-comics merchandise (like pins, bookmarks, etc) based on your fan made comics

-Non-comics merchandise (like pins, bookmarks, etc) based on established comics/anime/movie/etc characters that you do not own

Good news! We are announcing two contests for the coming Komikon Summer Fiesta! Check out the details below for the Summer Character Creation Contest and the Summer Comic Creation Contest.

SUMMER CHARACTER CREATION CONTEST

This year’s theme is :

"Lamang Dagat"

(Create a Sea / Water Creature / Character)

Contest is open to all comic book artists except for professionals with published works sold in bookstores.
CREATE AN ORIGINAL Sea / Water Creature / Character
Write a short write up about your character.
Entries can be digitally of traditionally rendered.
Entries are to be submitted online with a canvass size of 8 1/2 x 11 (letter size) and having the resolution of 150 - 300dpi. E-mail entries to komikon[at]gmail[dot]com with the subject: SUMMER KOMIKON: Character Making Contest. Only e-mail entries are accepted.
One entry per person only.
Deadline of submission of entries is on April 25, 2009

Contestants / groups are limited to only one entry.
Entries submitted by groups are required to submit the names of the individuals involved in creating the indie. Group entries with professionals on board are automatically disqualified.
Entries should adhere to the given theme. Entries deviating from the theme shall be automatically disqualified.
Deadline of submissions will be on April 25, 2009. Entries submitted beyond April 25 shall not be accepted.
Winners shall be announced on the event itself on May 16 and shall be notified via e-mail or phone.
The judge's decision is final.

Additional guidelines:

Entries should be in the form of a comic book with the following specs: 8.5 X 6.5 (long bond paper, folded, and stapled twice in the middle)
Entries should be placed in a short brown envelope with their name, address, phone number, and e-mail written legibly at the upper left hand corner.
Stories must be 4 to 12 pages long (excluding cover)
Please note that entries are non-returnable. Entries should be reproductions only. (originals will not be returned)
Colored and/or black and white entries are accepted.
There are no restrictions as to the genre or art style that can be used as long as the comic book follows the given theme.
The story should be in the form of a one-shot title. It should be whole in itself, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Multiple comic stories in a single entry (anthology) will not be allowed.

Criteria for Judging:

40% Visual narrative: Knowledge and application of the visual language of comics.

30% Story: Concept and integration of the given theme in a cohesive and entertaining tale.

20% Presentation: Expertise in comic book production. This includes legibility, quality of reproduction, and overall tech savvy.

10% Overall impact: This refers to how all of the elements unite to form a solid comic book.

KOMIKON SUMMER FIESTA INDIE TIANGGE IS NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION!

There will be 12 tables provided for the indie tiangge.
Three (3) groups/individuals per table (only 3 chairs per table).
First 36 groups/individuals to complete the registration process will be allowed to sell their comics / merchandise at the event.

KOMIKS 101 Talk: Tips On Getting Jobs Abroad

It is the first time in the history of the Annual Filipino Komiks Convention (KOMIKON) that it had week-long activities scheduled days before the event proper. With the help of the UP LUNAROCK and UP GRAIL, activities within the UP Diliman Campus were held from November 17-21, 2008.

The week started off with a talk entitled “KOMIKS 101”. The talk was held last November 17 at the Auditorium at the College of Fine Arts and moderated by Mr. Mark Navarro. Two topics were discussed that day. The first topic was about Filipino comic artists working abroad, “Komikeros for Hire”. The panelists were Gilbert Monsanto (Rambol, Tropa, Bayan Knights), Harvey Tolibao (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic), Melvin Calingo (Pasig, Destiny’s Hand) and Wilson Tortosa (Battle of the Planets, Tomb Raider). After each artist had introduced themselves and told their very inspiring stories about how they got into the comic business, we’ve summarized some important points in their discussion.

Tips on getting jobs abroad:

1) Developing your portfolio. We had a lot of good tips from our panelists like “do not be stuck with one art style”. Wilson Tortosa says he got selected for his unique portfolio of people in dynamic poses. A lot of new artists would only do pin ups with generic static poses. It is good to have your drawing “express emotions” as his current employer saw in Wilson’s work. It would be more impressive if artists show a variety of artworks - more than just coloring, drawing and inking, like layout jobs, 3D modeling, sculpture or crafts, or even script writing. As experienced by Gilbert Monsanto, his script writing became his stepping stone into comics.

2) Getting your work out. It is very fortunate for artists nowadays that the internet plays a huge part in getting jobs abroad. During Gilbert’s time, sample works had to be shipped and it took a long time to wait for responses. Today, with online sites like deviantart.com, artists’ works now has worldwide exposure. The internet also allows real time exchange and dialogues with clients abroad. Melvin Calingo got his work in Seven Seas Entertainment this way. Owning a personal website or having an account in sites like Deviant Art is really helpful. Attending comic conventions and seminars is also like going to job fairs. Have your printed portfolio handy. Harvey Tolibao and Wilson Tortosa got their break when they attended the seminars of Glasshouse Graphics Inc. where they are currently employed.

3) Protecting yourself. When accepting work via the internet, it is good to “set rules”. As discussed by the panel, a lot of artists are victims to the “exposure now, payment later” scheme. When offering commission works, it is advisable to ask for 50% down payment before starting on a project and the other 50% when it’s done. Also, setting specific guidelines for the client would be helpful, like specifying what you could or cannot do; size of artwork, how final artworks will be sent, and how many revisions will be accepted. In setting deadlines, let the client know how much time you really need so that they won’t be disappointed. Send rough samples with very low resolutions and very small print sizes so that it cannot be used. It is recommended that when artists upload original characters and scripts must be copyrighted.

4) Getting paid. There are numerous ways of accepting payment from clients abroad. The most recommended ways are thru XOOM and Paypal. Payments sent thru banks, like XOOM, will take a part of your payment for fees. So it is advisable to send the client a breakdown of payment showing additional fees separated from artist’s fees. For Paypal, an artist must have a credit card. For XOOM, a personal savings account is enough but it is better to have a dollar account. 5) Working for an agent. Having an agent is good in some ways. They are the ones who meet with clients, show your work around, and check up on you for deadlines. Agents do get a cut from artist’s fees but it’s like being spoon fed just waiting for work to come to you. Working for an agent is not for everyone though.

Two hours were not enough for this specific topic but the basics are covered. Most of our panelists can be said to have great luck on their side or just overly talented. It is truly an honor to have this set of panelists to help us start off, like they say, “Take it from the experts”.

Komikon Contests On November 22

The deadline has passed for the Comic Creation, Make The Page and Character Creation. If you were not able to join, do not fret! We still have loads of activities and contests for you on November 22!

COMIC STRIP MAKING CONTEST:

1. Registration is from 10am-12noon on November 22
2. Contest starts at 1:00pm
3. Contestants will create a 10 x 3 inch strip based on the theme that will only be revealed when the contest starts.
4. Paper and pencils will be provided. Additional materials brought by the contestants may be used.
5. After the time limit of 60 minutes, artworks will be judged. Finished or not finished, pass your papers! :D

MAKE THE PAGE CONTEST:

1. A group of 2-3 people can register.
2. Registration is from 10am-12noon on November 22
3. Contest starts at 3:00pm
4. The script will only be revealed when the contest begins.
5. Contestants must illustrate the script into a 2-page comic. No other words may be added except for sound effects.
6. Paper and pencils will be provided. Additional materials brought by the contestants may be used.
7. After the time limit of 90 minutes, artworks will be judged. Finished or not finished.

Randomly from 10 am to 8 pm, we'll be having on-stage games like Speed Drawing Contest, Caricature Showdown, Quick Draw, and Trivia Games!!! The mechanics for these fun and challenging contests will be announced on November 22.

Culture Crash Comics Reunited At Komikon 2008

Nabitin ba kayo? Gusto niyo ba ulit ng Reunion? Magsasama-sama silang muli kung saan nagsimula ang lahat…sa U.P.

...No, we are not talking about the band Eraserheads.

8 years ago, a group of 4 individuals breathed new life into Philippine comics. Culture Crash Comics first appeared on August of 2000. It’s a full colored anthology including a few pages of articles about the latest in music, games, movies, comics and technology. The man in charge of “The Premiere Comic Magazine” is Jescie James Palabay. James “Da Bhoss” is also the writer of the title “One Day Isang Diwa”, which is drawn by Elmer Damaso. The story features the not-so-typical high school life of Jun and his friends and a diwata named Diwa . Elmer, a.k.a. “I.Q. 40”, created “Cats Trail” which is about the adventures of Airee, a thief in the fantastical world of Memeria. The title “Pasig” was the post apocalyptic world of a bounty hunter named Mina, written and drawn by Melvin Calingo, a.k.a. “Taga-Ilog”. Jerard “JIO” Beltran did the futuristic mecha story “Solstice Butterfly” which was placed in hiatus on issue 8 and was replaced by “Kubori Kikiam” by Michael “Taga-kanal” David, a comic about talking fight food and what-nots in their lives.

In the four years of Culture Crash Comics they created the stir about Manga vs. Filipino art styles. They held the C3CON: The First Philippine Comicbook and Anime conventions in 2002 and 2003. They’ve given spotlight to independent comic book artists and more publishers followed suit. After 15 issues the company closed.

Why did it close? When will it come back? Will it ever come back? Where are the artists now? What have they been doing? All these questions can be answered at the KOMIKON 2008 as the Culture Crash takes the stage for their reunion. Gerry Alanguilan - Quintessential Komikero

Who says comics in the Philippines is dead when people like our guest of honor keep it alive?

Gerry Alanguilan, pride of San Pablo City in Laguna, is the artist for local titles Wasted, Johnny Balbona, Humanis Rex!, Timawa and ELMER. He also contributed to anthologies like Siglo: Freedom, Siglo: Passion and Filipino Komiks. His website, komikero.com, features his many works, videos and an online comics museum. The Philippine Comics Art Museum is a collection and proof of the rich comic heritage the Philippines had decades ago. He also became a professor at the College of St. Benilde. There he taught;Comics Illustration; for one term. Gerry has been invited to speak at numerous talks in different colleges and universities.

Aside from his local works, he is known for his contributions in the United States comic industry. He is known as inker for titles like Wetworks, X-Men, Superman: Birthright, Wolverine, High Roads, Fantastic Four, and Silent Dragon. He has also worked alongside with Leinil Francis Yu and Whilce Portacio.

Gerry Alanguilan will be one of the panelists at the KOMIKS 101 - a talk to be held on November 17, 2008 (Monday) at the UP Fine Arts Auditorium, UP Diliman. He'll be talking on the topic "Komiks in Education - Including comics into the curriculum"; which will be from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. He, along with Elbert Or and Jamie Bautista, will also have a lecture, "Comic Writing for Artists", on November 20, 2008 (Thursday) from 2:30pm-4:30pm at the College of Fine Arts in UP Diliman.

30th Anniversary of SKP at Komikon 2008

You see their works in newspapers and various magazines every single day. Comic strips are works of art that are made up of one to four panels that bring joy to a reader by making light issues of life. Many comic strips have come and gone and little is known about the artists who make them. It’s high time to re-introduce them into this new generation.

The Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas now celebrates its 30th anniversary. The group was founded on March of 1978 by artists such as Larry Alcala (Slice of Life), Hugo Yonzon Jr. (Sakay and Moy, Little Toto), editorial cartoonists Edgar Soller, Boy Togonon, Edd Aragon, Pol Galvez, Tito Milambiling (Kusyo at Buyok), and Roni Santiago (Baltic and Co., Planet Op Di Eyps). The group worked with various NGO’s, government leaders, malls and restaurants, and schools. Annually, members have been sent to Japan to join a forum for Asian cartoonists. Under the current president, Boboy Yonzon III, SKP has a long list of activities planned such as publishing art books; attending conventions abroad, holding local events, exhibits and contests for its members. With the changing times the group wishes to expand its membership especially with the growing number or online comic artists.

Learn more about the rich history of the lives behind the comic strips. The 4th Philippine Komiks Convetion (KOMIKON) highlights the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas on November 22, Saturday at the U.P. Bahay ng Alumni, U.P. Diliman, Quezon City. Get to know the artists and grab the opportunity to have caricatures drawn. The limited edition Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas Roster Book published last July will be available at the event (Php 500 for hardbound, Php 350 for paperbound).

KC Cordero, Associate Editor for The Buzz Magasin, Managing Editor of SINDAK! and the man behind a lot of comic book activity during the past couple of years, will be embarking on a rather surprising and selfless endeavor on the 4th Annual Philippine Comics Convention or Komikon at the UP Bahay ng Alumni on November 22, 2008.

He will be offering a 1-gig Samsung mp3 player as grand prize, along with books, comics, art supplies, and lots more to whoever comes up with the BEST “indie” at the Komikon. If you have an indie at the Komikon, you don’t have to sign up, register or join anything. KC will go to the Komikon and buy every single freaking indie in the place. That’s right. BUY. I think that’s amazing. So I think it’s a great idea to set aside a copy for KC when he passes by your table.

Philippine comics IS worth it, guys. It may not pay as much, but it’s still worth our very best.

Winners shall be announced on the event itself on November 22 and shall be notified via e-mail or phone.
The judge's decision is final.

Entries should be in the form of a comic book with the following specs:

8.5 X 6.5 (long bond paper, folded, and stapled twice in the middle)
Entries should be placed in a short brown envelope with their name, address, phone number, and e-mail written legibly at the upper left hand corner.
Stories must be 4 to 12 pages long (excluding cover)
Please note that entries are non-returnable. Entries should be reproductions only. (originals will not be returned)
Colored and/or black and white entries are accepted.
There are no restrictions as to the genre or art style that can be used as long as the comic book follows the given theme.
The story should be in the form of a one-shot title. It should be whole in itself, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Multiple comic stories in a single entry (anthology) will not be allowed.

Criteria for Judging:

40% Visual narrative: Knowledge and application of the visual language of comics.
30% Story: Concept and integration of the given theme in a cohesive and entertaining tale.
20% Presentation: Expertise in comic book production. This includes legibility, quality of reproduction, and overall tech savvy.
10% Overall impact: This refers to how all of the elements unite to form a solid comic book

KOMIKON INDIE TIANGGE IS NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION!

There will be 10 tables provided for the indie tiangge.
Four (4) groups/individuals per table (only 4 chairs per table).
First 40 groups/individuals to register will be allowed to sell their comics / merchandize at the event.

Terms to be considered:

Individuals/ group will still pay the entrance fee of P50
First come, First Serve seating. Please come 1 hour before the event starts.
To avoid crowding, only 1 person for a group can be seated in the indie tiangge area.
The organizers will get 10% of the total comic / merchandize sales at the end of the day

RF ONLINE CONTEST
RF Online is having the Quest for the RF Online Illustrator.

MECHANICS
1. This contest’s theme is: The Pioneers of Novus. Draw a picture of how your race becomes a dominating figure given the new features of Episode 2.

2. The size of the artwork must be exactly 11 x 17 inches (unframed). You may use either "portrait" or "landscape" orientation. It must have panels, word balloons, sound effects, etc. like a comic strip.

4. You may use any traditional medium (pen and ink, watercolors, etc.) or computer/digital art. For computer/digital entries, please submit a CD using 300dpi resolution JPEG on 8.5x11 inches.

40% - Relevance to the theme
20% - Workmanship
30% - Creativity and Distinctiveness
10% - Overall Impact

1. This contests theme is "Ragnarok 2: The Gate Of the World will open soon" . Draw your original Ragnarok 2 Fan Art, character Design (clothing, weapons) must be based on Ragnarok 2 Characters.

a. For computer/digital entries, please submit a CD using 300dpi

Komikon 2007: IAS On the Spot Drawing Contests

Terms and Conditions for the Lead Slinger Challenge Drawing Contest and the Pixel Battle Royale Digital Coloring Contest

1. There will be only one (1) winner for the Lead Slinger Challenge (drawing contest) and only one (1) winner for the Pixel Battle Royale (digital coloring contest) respectively. Each of the winners will be receiving Php 10,000.00 and a two-week in-house workshop at IAS Manila, Inc.
2. Judges decision is final.

3. Contestant must be a Filipino citizen (by birth or by naturalization) to enter the challenge.

4. Interested parties must submit at least 5 samples of their work to be considered for the contest. A panel of artists from IAS Manila, Inc. will shortlist three finalist from the total collection of submitted works. The contestants will be notified at least five (5) days before the event on November 17, 2007 by e-mail, SMS, and phone call.

5. Finalists must confirm their participation in the contest by e-mail, SMS, and phone call at least 3 days before the contest proper to give the organizers ample time to select a substitute in the event that they will be unable to join.

6. There will be no contest fees to be paid.

7. The artworks produced by the contestants in the contest proper remain the property of each individual contestant. IAS Manila, Inc. reserves the right to use said artworks in promoting the event including photographs and videos of the contestants taken during the event.

We have already increased the number of group/individuals for this year compared to last year, but due to space constrictions, we can't accept any more. Komikon 2007: Character Making Contest

Heroes ala Pinoy

What if this character was Filipino? Your favorite Superhero? Your favorite Anime character? Your favorite literary character?

Contest is open to all comic book artists except for professionals with published works sold in bookstores.
Redraw / recreate any existing comic / manga character into a Filipino counterpart. For example: if Wolverine was Filipino, what would he look like? What would his story be? Will he still be called Wolverine?
Write a short write up about your recreated character.
Entries can be digitally or traditionally rendered.

Rules:
Contest is open to all comic book artists except for professionals with published works sold in bookstores.
Contestants/ groups are limited to only one entry.
Entries submitted by groups are required to submit the names of the individuals involved in creating the indie. Group entries with professionals on board are automatically disqualified.
Entries should adhere to the given theme. Entries deviating from the theme shall be automatically disqualified.

This year’s theme is :

Makabagong alamat ng kung ano anong bagay na hindi pa nagagawan ng kwento.

We have heard endless of such tales when we were kids, Legend of the Pineapple, Legend of the Rainbow, Legend of this, Legend of that etcetera. What we want from you guys is a legend that we have never heard of before.

20% Presentation: Expertise in comic book production. This includes legibility, quality of reproduction, and overall tech savvy.
10% Overall impact: This refers to how all of the elements unite to form a solid comic book.

How to Play Talecraft:
There are 3 types of cards in Talecraft: Genre Cards (story-type), Archetype Cards (characters), and Key Cards (keywords, plotlines). Pick 1 Genre, 2 Archetypes and 6 Keys; then make a story out of them. We’ll give you 5 minutes to create your story, and another 5 minutes to tell it.

For the past two years KOMIKON cemented relationships among players in and out of the comic book industry. Be it peers, colleagues, readers, creators, publishers and retailers, KOMIKON is THE venue and the EVENT for sharing and renewing ties that bind.

This is where the depth and width of Filipino talent in creating various worlds and stories, from the golden age to the here and now are showcased. KOMIKON also served as the link for the local market to reach out to the global village. Bottom line, this once a year fest promotes the rich medium that is comic book, which can be seen through the myriad of local works drawing from influences not only locally but from our foreign counterparts as well.

Indeed KOMIKON is the celebration of the great art form endearingly called by Pinoys from all walks of life as Komiks. This was the medium that once served as our “national past time” particularly during its golden age from the 70s to the early 80s. It was an industry that gave birth to superstar illustrators and writers. Komiks opened a window for this unique breed of artists to break into the international scene. Their Komiks stories led to adaptations into other media such as film, television and radio making them part of an unforgettable part of our local tradition of excellence in art and literature. KOMIKON is the event that aims to gather its supporters and creators in one place to commemorate komiks as it deserve to be distinguished.

KOMIKON 2007 will be held at the UP Diliman’s Bahay ng Alumni on November 17, 2007, from 10am to 6pm. Again it will showcase the creations of Filipino artists from various genres and themes and give tribute to the creators and their creations. The 3rd Filipino Komiks Convention aims to bring together comic book artists/groups and publishers in a venue where they could present their talents, works and services to the public. Most importantly, it aims to give a break to aspiring comic artists. It would like to offer a venue for new art groups and different generations of artists for a free exchange of ideas. Hopefully it would lead to a transcending of stereotypes and broaden the scope of comics – from local to international to cross-cultural, sequential to strips, amateur to professional and traditional publication to independent comics publishing. This event will raise awareness of the exciting state of contemporary Philippine comics industry.

Contests like the Independent Comicbook, On the Spot Comic Strip Making and the Original Character Making Contest hopes to bring out the next generation of Comic Book creators to the fore front. Our special guests, comic book superstars from the past and present, both coming from the local and international fields will be available for consultations. They will share insights about the industry through their multifaceted experiences. Fun-filled activities will also be provided by our exhibitors through their respective booths and own activities.

Komikon is also the home of the Komikon Awards, a vote-based awards given to those who the readers, creators and other supporters of the medium deemed to be deserving. Taking the cue from the film industry that yearly take time to award meritorious films and give accolades to their worthy creators, the Komikon Committee will open the nominations for the 2nd Komikon Awards in this event for the following year. The Komikon Awards will give the opportunity for readers, creators, publishers and retailers to nominate and vote for the best in the industry, both local and international. The awards aim to encourage solidarity within the industry to produce quality local books and promote wider readership in the market.

This year’s event is organized by The Artists’ Den and Groundbreakers Inc.

Groundbreakers Inc. is owned and run by artists and writers alike. One of their main goals is to provide the best local talents with the opportunity to garner professional experience and success in the industry, not just locally but internationally as well. By doing so, they hope to make the Philippines one of the prime source of talent for the Manga industry in South East Asia and eventually the world. One of their aims is to bring forth these talents to both local and international markets and to showcase to the world the potential of Filipino artists and story tellers through high quality Manga publications.

The Artists’ Den, on the other hand, has a long-term commitment to help art groups grow, to promote goodwill among fellow Comic Creators and support different works and activities among appreciative audiences. The organization had been witness to the ups and downs of the comic industry as members themselves are mixed up in it. The group has actively participated in the past conventions and now would like to have a convention that focuses on comics alone.

Ragnarok Online is having the Comics Creation Competition. This contest has a Grand Prize of Php 2,500 in cash, 200 million zeny, guaranteed +3 upgrade to any 1 item, 20 Old Purple Boxes and RO merchandise.

RF Online is having the Quest for the RF Online Illustrator.. LEAD SLINGER CHALLENGE Contest Guidelines

1. Contestant must be a Filipino citizen (by birth or by naturalization) and 18 years old or above to enter the Challenge.

2. There will be three challenges/assignments which have to be completed in exactly one hour’s time each. The challenges/assignments and the materials needed will be given on the spot. Critiques will be given by the judges individually on stage during the KOMIKON 2006.

3. Interested parties must submit 5 samples of their work to be considered for the contest including their contact information (name, e-mail, URL, mailing address, landline number, and mobile phone) and a short bio-data (age, sex, etc.). Please submit your samples and contact information to jonas@storyboardsonline.com no later than October 6, 2006. The judges will shortlist five artists from the collective to participate in the said contest. The contestants will be notified 5 days before the event by e-mail, SMS, and phone call.

4. There are no contest fees to be paid.

5. The prize is Php 10,000.00 and a paid two-week working contract (internship, if winner is still a student) in IAS Manila, Inc.

"I internalize my emotions with the characters and scenes in the frame. It's not only my hands that make my illustrations; there is the coordination of my heart and mind. I've got to feel it. Oftentimes, I'm the one inside those frames suffering, laughing, moving." — Steve Gan

One of the highest-paid comic book illustrators in the Philippines, Steve Gan is a naturalized Filipino of Chinese ancestry and he regards himself as a self-made artist. Since there were no schools that taught courses on comic book illustration, he had to learn the basics of the comic art through perseverance and he honed his talent through study.

Research is one task Steve never gets tired of. He has voluminous collection of books on paintings and well-known illustrators, and claims that he's learned a lot from poring over the biographies and analyzing the famous brush-pushers.

Drawing has two important aspects for him: the aesthetic and the commercial. He could easily combine them by simply going down to the leveI of standard the readers require without losing control over his art.

Steve became interested in drawing at a very early age. It was the work of Francisco V. Coching, the acknowledged dean of Filipino comic illustrators, who inspired him in the '50s. He became more engrossed in drawing comics rather than contemplating architecture (which he was taking up at the Mapua Institute of Technology).

Steve's illustrations began to attract attention within the Filipino comic book industry. To further develop his craft and help contribute to the advancement of comic art in the country, he joined the Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists (SPIC). His popularity soared to new heights when he began to reap awards from comic illustration contests sponsored by prestigious organizations concerned with giving due recognition to those involved in the arts. In 1980, he copped first prize for his work on Ang Panday (serialized in Pilipino Komiks) in an art contest under the aegis of SPIC, San Miguel Corporation, and Philamlife Insurance. He broke his own record by winning first and second prizes in '81 for Mekanizmo, which was serialized in the Tagaiog Klasiks.

The artist's initial break into comics came with a novel called Bernardita, serialized in the now-defunct Palos Komiks. His longest-running comic novel was Pieta, which ran for five years. Aside from doing most of his work for the Philippine comics, he also contributed to Warren Publications and Marvel Comics. For Marvel, he worked on many of their characters, such as Conan, Ka-Zar, Tarzan, Oracula, Solomon Kane, and Brak the Barbarian.

For Steve, to illustrate haphazardly is a professional sin. "I do not want the characters to appear like puppets. I do not want to do an injustice to my readers. I want them to enjoy my illustrations as much as I enjoy doing them"

In the early '90s, Steve was introduced by Lazarino Baarde to Chris Bartleman and Blair Peters, owners of Studio B in Vancouver, Canada. For 13 months, he did storyboards for various animation projects, including Jungle Cubs, Timon and Pumba, Calamity Jane, Savage Dragon, Invasion America, and A Christmas Carol. Being away from his family for that length of time proved too much for Steve, so he decided to go back to the Philippines and work for an animation studio in Manila doing storyboards and layouts for such films and cartoon series as X-Men, Fantastic Four, Biker Mice, Tarzan, Teacher's Pet, and Atlantis.

Today, some of Steve's drawings and paintings are on exhibit, along with the work of Francisco V. Coching, at the Pasig Museum in the Philippines.— Manuel Auad

She is the artist of one of the longest running strips in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Loveknots.

It was first published in that broadsheet in 1988. She is also the artist of Nini Liit, which was published in the People's Journal in 1981. Her other works include Pipo, Bobita, and Tres Chicks. When asked about what she thought about the comic strips in the newspapers today, she says, "What I can say is that most of the authors of our comic strips are very young, and some strips are written in english...ibang-iba during our time."

1. Register on the day of the event at the designated area that will be announced, between 10 a.m. until 12 noon.

2. Each participant must bring his or her own drawing materials. Paper should be letter size (8 ½ x 11).

In order to adhere/conform with the event's theme, the contest-free cosplay event will be STRICTLY FILIPINO KOMIK CHARACTERS ONLY!!! KOMIKon won't be permitting any other categories like anime, manga, western comics, etc.

The event theme for this year is FILIPINO KOMIKS.

Comicbook Creating Contest 2005

THE THEME: EVERYDAY FILIPINO

Everyday Filipino - the little normal things that we ignore... [samples coming soon]

- Contest is open to all comic book artists except for professionals with published paid works sold in major bookstores (Comics published thru photocopiers are allowed to join).

- Contestants/ groups are limited to only one entry.

- Entries submitted by groups are required to submit the names of the individuals involved in creating the indie. Group entries with professionals on board are automatically disqualified.

- Entries should adhere to the given theme. Entries deviating from the theme shall be automatically disqualified.

- Submit 3 copies of your entry toJon Zamarat 132 a Narra Street,Project 3, Quezon Cityfrom September 1 until October 10, 2005. Entries submitted beyond October 10 shall not be accepted.

- Winners shall be announced on the event itself on October 22 and shall be notified via e-mail or phone.

- The judge’s decision is final.

- Entries should be in the form of a comic book with the following specs:o 8.5 X 6.5 (long bond paper, folded, and stapled twice in the middle)

o Entries should be placed in a short brown envelope with their name, address, phone number, and e-mail written legibly at the upper left hand corner.
o Stories must be 8 to 20 pages long (including cover)
o Please note that entries are non returnable. Entries should be reproductions only. (originals will not be accepted)
o Colored and/or black and white entries are accepted.
o There are no restrictions as to the genre or art style that can be used as long as the comic book follows the given theme.
o The story should be in the form of a one-shot title. It should be whole in itself, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Multiple comic stories in a single entry (anthology) will not be allowed.

Original Pinoy Komiks Character Making Contest 2005

Design your own original character that could star in your very own comic book. Pick your own genre, be it a superhero, fantasy, drama, romance etc, let your imagination run wild. Include a brief description of what makes your character different from the rest. Entries could either be in Color or Black & White, manually rendered or digitally colored.

1. There will be two categories: 15 and below/16 and up.
2. Submissions should not be larger than 8.5" x11".
3. Render the character in an action pose.
4. E-mail submissions will be accepted at komikon@gmail.com with subject heading: Komikon Character Contest. Files must not exceed 300KB.

THE EVENT

What is KOMIKON?

KOMIKON 2005 : 1st Philippine Komiks Convention aims to bring together different comic book artists/groups and publishers in a venue where they could present their talents, works and services to the public and, most importantly, to aspiring comic artists. We would like to bring in different art groups and different generations of artists for a free exchange of ideas, break down stereotypes, and broaden the scope of comics – from international to local, sequential to strips, professional to amateur, and published to independent comics. We would also like to bring to people’s awareness the current state of the Philippine comics industry.

In one day, we will hold contests to encourage participation and draw in a large attendance of people. The area will be divided to hold an exhibit area, an area for contests, an area for exhibitors’ booths/tables, an area for sponsors, registration/information area.

THE ORGANIZATION

The Artists’ Den is founded in the year 1999 by a group of 3 artists who dreamed of starting a group that would cater to the different art groups in the Philippines with different styles of drawing and beliefs. The artists and their followers are an unattended audience here in our country but the founding members believed in everyone’s potential to draw and reach for the stars. The group meets on a weekly basis to share views and update each other on the latest developments and news. The group also has a mailing list with more than 200 subscribers where artists convene online aside from the weekly meetings. Our organization has a long-term commitment to helping other artist groups, to promote goodwill among fellow Comic Creators and promote different works and activities among appreciative audiences.

- To make the artist realize Who he is as a person and the purpose of his existence.
- To let the artist realize Who he really is as an artist
- To make the artist realize What influence he can make from this generation to the next.
- To initiate & facilitate activities that would create an atmosphere of interactivity & creativity
- To elevate art to a higher form of professionalism and create an awareness that art is a
lifestyle and not a trend.
- To teach them to teach others.

"To give the artist aim, a higher level of empowerment and enhanced art-worth leading to powerful artwork, through apprenticeship and mentoring, propagating the passion to other artists."

In the past 6 years, the Artists’ Den has participated on various Conventions and Events. Just this year, the group has participated at 4th Philippine Toy Convention (TOYCON), 3rd New Worlds Alliance Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention (NWA SciFi Con), 1st G2 Games and Gadget Show 2005. The CORE Group has decided that it’s about time that the group organize a convention of their own, an event quite different from the previous ones they have participated in. Thus, KOMIKon is born.
